Ninety-eight adults were found dead from an apparent mass suicide at
Hillandale Park in Harrisonburg on May 12. The dead, found in the
horseshoe pit near Shelter 4, are believed to have belonged to a
religious cult led by a figure known only as Simon. Officials familiar
with the case stated off the record that he was not among the dead.
The investigation is ongoing, but the cause of death for all appears
to have been orally self-administered cyanide. Several containers of
the poison were found at the scene, mixed with mango Kool-Aid. The
maker of Kool-Aid, Kraft Foods, has issued a press release stating,
"We would like to remind current and future customers that the
traditional and preferred beverage of choice for cult mass suicides is
Flavor Aid, made by our competitor Jel Sert. Also, Kraft Foods wishes
to extend its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims." _________________ AST
